Electric 2006 Corvette breaks Top Speed World Record for Top Street Legal All Electric Car!
Ever dreamt of what a greener Corvette might look or feel like on the tracks? Try plucking out the engine and replacing it with chargeable batteries. Genovation Cars, a company that converts sports cars to electric-powered vehicles, has found a way to pump ‘electric juice’ into a Corvette, to create a super fast electric sports car, the first of its kind.
Not too long ago, the thought of an all-electric Vette was considered a dreamy ‘what if’ but Genovation Cars has brought that dream to reality. Admittedly, achieving top speed has been elusive for electric vehicle manufacturers given that torque decreases with the length of the runway.
The Genovation eXtreme Electric (GXE) is essentially a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 with a modified electric engine. The GXE, chastised as the ‘E-ray’ from the Chevrolet Stingray, hit a speed of 186.8 mph on the testing tracks, a remarkable feat for an electric vehicle! Truth be told, a regular Corvette could surpass this speed level by far, but few if any electric cars can match the GXE speed.
The new electric Vette is powered by a 44kWh battery set, comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and can attain up to 150 miles when fully charged. Replacing the standard 7.0-liter V-8 engine, the GXE leverages the Z06’s lightweight construction to support an advanced engine that spits out up to 600 pound-feet of torque and 700 horsepower.
According to Genovation, the prototype flaunts a balanced 50-50 distribution of weight and at normal driving, can attain a range of at least 130 miles. Once work on the GXE is complete, it is expected that the electric Corvette will attain higher performance levels.
At a sticker price of $330,000, Corvette fans with a bias for electric cars can have a piece of the GXE. Alternatively, one could get it at about $290,000 if a donor Vette is supplied.
